COVID-19 Risk Rising In Several Key Sonoran Cities, Including Capital

Five major Sonoran cities, including the capital Hermosillo, are within just a few points of being considered high risk, according to the state’s coronavirus risk measure. That would come with stepped-up restrictions, like limits on restaurant capacity.

Also on the list are Cajeme, home to Sonora’s second-largest city Ciudad Obregón, and Guaymas, home to the popular beach town San Carlos.

This comes as the state’s vaccination effort has picked up, while still lagging far behind neighboring Arizona.

As of Sunday, roughly 320,000 doses had been administered in Sonora, according to state health authorities, compared to 4.1 million in Arizona, which is vaccinating at roughly five times the rate when accounting for population.
