State transportation officials have endorsed a five-year construction plan they say would invest more than $1 billion in freeway preservation projects.
Friday is the public’s first of three chances to give feedback on the draft.
The Arizona Department of Transportation’s plan covers projects from 2022 through 2026. If approved in June, the agency plans to upgrade hundreds of miles of lanes that are in bad or fair condition.
The blueprint lists major projects on key access corridors north and south of metro Phoenix. State officials want to start work next year on adding lanes to an often backed-up stretch of Interstate-17 between Anthem Way and Sunset Point. In 2023, they hope to begin replacing Interstate 10 bridges over the Gila River.
Other big widening and safety projects are planned near Wickenburg and Kingman.
