More bodies of undocumented immigrants who died trying to cross through Arizona were recovered from the desert even as apprehensions dropped, a new study by the University of Arizona has found.
The authors of the new report found that 3,356 bodies were discovered in southern Arizona over the span of 30 years between 1990 and 2020. They were largely young Mexican men. And they died in areas of the borderlands away from cities and urban areas.
"Today we’re finding remains of people in really rugged areas, out toward the West Desert, higher elevations where people were not crossing a decade ago or even five years ago," said the UA’s Daniel Martinez who helps lead the university’s Binational Migration Institute, which wrote the report.
It found the number of Central Americans dying in Arizona’s desert is also increasing.
