Peoria Trying New Approach To Increase Recycling, Decrease Contamination

Peoria is undertaking a pilot project to see if it can get its residents to recycle more, and to stop putting things that are not recyclable into the recycling bins.

The Blue Lid Pilot Program will involve 2,600 homes in the West Valley city, some of which will get a new, blue lid on their tan recycling bin with a full-color mold on it telling people the do's and don’ts of what can and cannot go in there.

The program will start in early May and run for six weeks; the city should know the results by late summer or early fall, and a national nonprofit is paying for it.

The Show spoke with Kevin Burke, Peoria’s public works director, to learn more about the program.
