On Tuesday, the Scottsdale City Council unanimously passed an LGBTQ inclusive anti-discrimination ordinance.
Scottsdale joins Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, Tempe and other cities that have adopted an ordinance to fully protect LGBTQ families and individuals from discrimination in public accommodations, employment and housing in the city. Currently, Arizona doesn’t have a state law with such protections.
In a statement, ONE Community, a coalition of businesses, organizations and individuals who support diversity, inclusion and equality, said the ordinance is essential to ensure all people, including LGBTQ people, who want to work and live in Scottsdale are treated fairly and equally.
“All hard-working people, including those who are LGBTQ, want to do their jobs and provide for their families. LGBTQ people want the same thing as everyone else — the freedom to work hard, access basic services, and take care of themselves and their loved ones without fear of discrimination. We are grateful to the mayor and council for their leadership and willingness to work with stakeholders across the community,” said Angela Hughey, president of ONE Community.
