An Arizona nonprofit is planting trees to provide shade and other benefits for another nonprofit. The trees will also be memorials to victims of COVID-19.
The nonprofit Trees Matter promotes tree canopy in the Valley. The group wants to plant 100 trees in south Phoenix by fall. It’s working with another nonprofit, the TigerMountain Foundation, which plants community gardens in low-income neighborhoods.
Aimee Esposito says that Trees Matter will provide both fruit and shade trees. The group also wants to hang tags with the names COVID-19 victims from the branches.
“But what makes this project really unique with these trees is that we’re wanting to honor people who have been impacted by the pandemic, by COVID-19,” Esposito said.
