Biking community in Ciudad Obregon mourns cyclist killed in crossfire

A well-known cyclist in the Sonoran city of Ciudad Obregon was killed by stray gunfire this week.

Isaac Salomón was on his way home from work Wednesday afternoon when he was hit during a shootout, according to media reports. He comes from an accomplished family of cyclists, and a brother and sister of his — Betsabee Salomón and David Salomón — are previous winners of the Tour de Tucson.

“We’re all outraged, that would be the word,” said Daniel Hernandez, president of the local cycling league.

Given the circumstances, he said it's something that could have happened to anyone in the city, which is one of the most violent in Mexico. Cyclists accompanied his body to a cemetery Friday, and next week a commemorative ride is planned.
