Feminist March Saturday Commemorates Movement’s Growth Over Last 5 Years

On April 24, 2016, women across Mexico protested against gender violence in what’s become known as one of the biggest feminist demonstrations in the nation’s history. This weekend, women in Hermosillo are  celebrating the movement’s growthsince then.

April 24 has become emblematic in Mexico since 2016, when thousands of women took to the streets to demand an end to the country’s soaring rates of femicide and gender violence.

Raffaela Fontanot says the protest brought together women from different generations, backgrounds and ideologies, and kicked off a new stage on feminist activism in Mexico

"And that's what makes April 24th such a memorable day, right?" she said.

Now, Hermosillo’s feminist collectives will commemorate the massive demonstrations five years ago with a cultural event and march on Saturday.

Fontanot says there will be music, poetry, information about feminist issues and a conversation about the movement that has been built in Sonora since 2016. And that it will also be a chance for members of Sonora’s feminists collectives to regroup after more than a year of the pandemic.
