Last week, Gov. Doug Ducey issued an executive order that ended the mandate that all students and staff wear masks in schools. And then Mesa Public Schools — the largest district in the state — announced that it will phase out mask wearing in its schools and on buses. Mesa is certainly not alone in this as some other traditional and charter schools are also lifting requirements.
Starting April 26, the district will allow students to be maskless when they’re outside. Then, if the district doesn’t see any spikes in cases, it will begin to recommend — but not require — mask wearing next week. The district said it will address the concerns of parents and staff in this process, and if it sees an increase in cases, take action.
But this has some parents and teachers in the district concerned.
The Show reached out to Mesa Public Schools for an interview about this and did not receive a response as of April 26. But The Show did speak with Mesa parent Rachael Clawson.
Clawson has a daughter in second grade at Mendoza Elementary School and is worried about what she will tell her. The Show spoke with her for more about her concerns.
