Sonoran authorities are pushing for a restructuring of security strategies in Cajeme, where violence has been rising in recent months.
The goal is to reverse the troubling rise in murder in the municipality, home to the state’s second-largest city Ciudad Obregon. And to do that, the Sonoran Coordinating Committee for Peace and Security is pushing for a “restructuring” of the operations program of security forces and a strengthening of their enforcement actions, according to a state release.
For years, Cajeme has been a hot spot of violence in Mexico, but murder has surged there in recent months. It’s one of 15 places that account for a quarter of murders, and murder cases during the first three months of 2021 were up more than 40% over the same period the year before.
State authorities are also calling for a new strategy in Caborca in northern Sonora, which has seen a dramatic increase in violence over the last year.
