The United States has suspended the importing of wild-caught shrimp from Mexico.
In a State Department noticein the Federal Register, the agency said it “suspended the certification of Mexico because its sea turtle protection program is no longer comparable to that of the United States.” In response, Mexico’s National Aquaculture and Fishing Commission said it would carry out preventive and corrective measures, including training and an aggressive inspection and enforcement effort.
“We don’t foresee that there will be any problems,” said León Tissot, secretary of the Sonoran branch of the National Fishing Industry Chamber.
He said such a ban has happened before, and he believes that the current one shouldn’t take long to clear up. The ban does not apply to farmed shrimp, which accounts for the vast majority of Sonoran production, according to Tissot.
