More than half of Arizona adults have now had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. But the average number of shots administered each day in our state continues to fall.
Throughout March and April, the Arizona Department of Health Services reported several days where more than 70,000 Arizonans got shots in a 24-hour period. But recent reports have hovered around 20,000 vaccines daily.
Debbie McCune Davis, executive director of the Arizona Partnership for Immunization, said there were always going to be people anxious to roll up their sleeves as soon as possible, but now that group has been vaccinated.
“You then get folks who might not be as comfortable with the idea of driving to a location to get a vaccine. They might want to have a personal conversation with somebody who they trust,” Davis said. “What we have to do going forward is make it easier for people to have those conversations and easier for them to access the vaccine.”
All Arizona adults are now eligible for the vaccine, but our state’s rate of vaccination remains below the national average, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 57% of U.S. adults have had at least one shot. But just 53% of Arizona adults are immunized.
