Mexican authorities are investigating a deadly shooting by that country’s National Guard in which a Sonoran state attorney’s staff member was killed.
On Wednesday near Caborca in northwestern Sonora, members of Mexico’s National Guard shot at a vehicle carrying two employees of the state Attorney’s Office, wounding one and killing the other. Sonora’s Gov. Claudia Pavlovich recently met with Mexico’s security secretary to discuss the incident, which was attributed to a likely error on the part of the guard, according to a statement from the Sonoran state government.
“There are still more doubts than answers,” said Manuel Hoyos, head of the Observatorio Sonora por la Seguridad, one of several organizations that signed onto a letterexpressing concern about what happened.
In the letter, signatories criticize the militarized security strategy that has been rolled out in Caborca and other places in the state where violence has only increased.
