Mesa Anti-Discrimination Ordinance Will Take Effect, Will Not Go To Voters

After the Mesa City Council approved an ordinance that extended additional legal protections to the LGBTQ community, a group of citizens started collecting signatures to force a public vote to repeal that ordinance.

Last month, the group, United for Mesa, filed more than 11,000 signatures — enough to force the issue onto the ballot. But after supporters of the ordinance alleged not enough of those signatures were valid, United for Mesa backed down, saying it didn’t have the money to fight the ordinance’s deep-pocketed supporters.

Tyler Montague is a political consultant and Mesa Republican who had been working behind the scenes to support the ordinance. The Show spoke with him to learn more about the situation.
