The United States has dropped an accused Mexican drug trafficker from its list of foreign nationals targeted in sanctions.
Jesus Reynaldo Zambada is brother to longtime Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada. He testified in the high-profile New York case against El Chapo Joaquin Guzman in 2018. He was arrested in Mexico in the early 2000s and held in the U.S. since 2012.
The U.S. government has not revealed whether he remains in custody. But in a simple two-line description, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said he’d been deleted from its black list.
The list serves as a warning to U.S. citizens not to do business with persons on it because of their designation as a narcotics kingpin. Removal from the list is very rare.
