Valley Metro Researching Alternative Transit In Chandler's Price Corridor

Valley Metro is requesting comment on a study of potential new transit services in the city of Chandler.

The study is a joint effort between Valley Metro and the city to evaluate alternatives beyond traditional bus service on Price Road.

The ideas for alternative transit include ride sharing, similar to Uber and Lyft, and microtransit, which utilizes large vans or minibuses for app-enabled ride hailing.

Madeline Phipps of Valley Metro says other large cities utilize a microtransit system and that Glendale initiated a pilot program for microtransit last spring.

“I think in the last public meeting they used an example from Dallas, so there are different cities that are using it but it would be something different for the Phoenix metro area,” said Phipps.

Phipps says Chandler’s population is expected to keep growing in the coming years, and this study puts the city in a better position to keep up with that growth.

Comments on the study open May 20, and the deadline to comment is June 11.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The story has been updated to include Glendale initiating a pilot program for microtransit.
