Mexico Pushing For Border Reopening By This Summer

In what has become a monthly ritual, Mexican and U.S. officials announced this week another monthlong extension of the restrictions through late June.

But when asked if changes could be coming next month, Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said they’re hoping the U.S. loosens them sometime over the summer.

His U.S. counterparts are holding off until vaccination efforts along the border are nearing completion, he said, adding that they have mentioned a threshold over 60% of residents vaccinated. In Nogales, well over half of residents have received at least one dose, according to state data.

U.S. nationals have generally not faced restrictions entering Mexico, and their return is considered essential under the rules, but many Mexicans have been locked out of the U.S. for roughly 15 months.
