Glendale officials are set to break ground Monday morning on a new four-acre lake at a regional park on the west side of the city.
The hole dug is to be filled with SRP irrigation water and stocked by the state with rainbow trout and other fish.
The park near 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road already has attractions like a library, splash pad and archery range. There’s also enough space for Glendale to potentially build a recreation or aquatics center.
Fish stocked for anglers at Heroes Regional Park Lake will swim in SRP water that would normally be used for farming.
“To fill the lake (will) take approximately 90-acre feet. That’s equivalent to very close to 30,000,000 gallons,” said David Beard, city engineer.
Beard said evaporation caused by hot and dry desert weather is expected to force the city to replace about 13,000,000 gallons of water in the lake each year.
