April Was Sonora’s Most Violent Month In Nearly 25 Years

Violence in neighboring Sonora continues to worsen.

And with 195 murdered victims, April brought a new grisly record: most murder victims in a single month since at least 1997, the earliest year available for federal crime data.

So far this year, there have been nearly 650 murder victims, up 40% over the first four months of 2020, which currently holds the dubious distinction of being the state’s most violent. 2021 is currently on track to cruise past it.

Much of the violence is concentrated in a handful of municipalities, like Cajeme and Caborca, which have each seen dramatic increases over the last year.
