Maricopa County Records First Heat Death For 2021

Maricopa County has recorded its first heat-related death of 2021. The victim was an older male whose air-conditioner was broken.

As temperatures continue to rise in the Valley, the county hopes to avoid a repeat of last year.

Last year, the county recorded 323 heat-related deaths. That was 62% higher than 2019, and the highest number since the county began to keep track about two decades ago.

Rebecca Sunenshine is with the county health department. She says the increase was due to a variety of factors, such as record heat, coronavirus and the financial stress brought on by the pandemic.

“I just think it’s important for people to know that there are lots of resources available for people who are concerned about paying their electricity bills, or losing their home, that there are resources, utility assistance,” Sunenshine said.

Sunenshine recommends checking up on elderly family members during the hotter months.
