Arizona Planning To Launch Sports Betting On NFL Opening Day

The Department of Gaming is planning for Arizonans to legally begin wagering on sporting events in September.

In a statement, the department announced a target date of Sept. 9, which coincides with the NFL 2021 season opener.

Previously, Arizona residents could not place bets on sporting events. But after passage of legislation this spring, fans will be able to make wagers at casinos as well as on mobile devices.

Garrick Taylor, interim president & CEO for the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says it's a modernization of the professional sports economy in Arizona. “Not only is it great for civic pride but it’s also a tourist attraction in and of itself," Taylor said, "so this a new amenity added on to that already very important industry.”

Taylor said betting apps are partnering with professional sports teams to offer unique experiences online and in-person at events.

“There's going to be some competition here to attract as many users and eyeballs to a particular branded technology," he said. "Those applications that offer the best gaming experience are more likely to attract the most players.”

The gaming department says draft rules for event wagering will be available to the public for inspection and comment on June 14.
