By Wide Margin, Alfonso Durazo Wins Sonoran Governorship

Mexico’s former security secretary has won the governorship in neighboring Sonora.

Alfonso Durazo, representing a coalition led by the president’s Morena party, did it by wide margins. Preliminary resultsshow him with well over half of votes cast. His nearest competitor — Ernesto Gándara — came in at nearly 36% and concededMonday, wishing his competitor well with his six-year term.

On Monday, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey called Durazo to congratulate him, according to tweets from both leaders.

At a press conference Monday, Durazo laid out priorities for his administration, which begins in September. Among them are restarting the pandemic-battered economy and bringing peace back to the state. Violence has grown dramatically in Sonora in recent years, including while Durazo served as security secretary, and the state is currently on pace to exceed last year’s record-setting murder toll.
