Morena, the political party of Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, fared well in Sonora during national elections over the weekend.
Besides winning the governorship by wide margins, the party on its own or in coalition won all federal deputy seats and the majority of state congressional seats, according to preliminary election results.
Morena also did well in elections in most major municipalities, like Nogales, San Luis Rio Colorado, Cajeme and Guaymas. However, those preliminary results gave Antonio Astiazarán, the candidate for a coalition of three major Mexican parties, a more-than 6,000 vote lead over incumbent Hermosillo mayor Célida López, of Morena. López has not conceded, and in a Tuesday afternoon tweetsaid that a recount will start Wednesday and that “we will defend the vote of every citizen.”
