Over the weekend, Sonora’s state electoral institute certified the results of the state’s recent race for governor and a number of other offices.
Those results confirm what preliminary data showed: Morena, the party of Mexico’s president, performed very well in the state, with Alfonso Durazo, former national security secretary, taking the governorship by wide margins.
Beyond certifying the governor’s race, the winners of state congressional and mayoral races were also confirmed, according to a release from the state electoral institute. That includes Antonio Astiazarán, the candidate of an opposition coalition for Hermosillo mayor who edged out Morena incumbent Celida López by more than 4,000 votes, according to the institute’s count. López has not conceded the race.
