Mexico’s president says he’s moving forward with plans to build a state-owned solar energy facility in northern Mexico.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he wants to take advantage of the energy potential in sun soaked Sonora with a state-owned solar park — an ambitious project for a government that has so far made little investment in solar and wind energy. AMLO has also put up barriers to private sector renewable projects.
He said the federally funded project would be tied to Mexico's federal electricity network, with the aim of providing more reliable, affordable energy. He added that it could allow the government to cut back on federal subsidies that help cover skyrocketing summer energy costs.
He promised to build the solar facility during his 2018 presidential campaign. Now, Sonora’s new Gov.-elect Alfonso Durazo will help bring the project to fruition, he said.
