With cases mounting, Sonoran health authorities are worried the state could return to high risk on the national coronavirus scale.
Over the weekend, four major Sonoran cities — Hermosillo, Cajeme, Caborca and Navojoa — did return to orange — or high risk — on the state’s own scale. That will come with closures for casinos and nightclubs, and reduced occupancy for other businesses.
If strict pandemic measures aren’t observed, “it’s possible that in coming weeks Sonora will be at orange again,” the Sonoran Health Department’s Dr. Gerardo Álvarez said over the weekend.
More than 200 new cases were reported on Saturday and Sunday, some of the highestdaily figures seen since the tail end of the catastrophic winter wave.
Vaccinations are continuing, but as of Sunday, more than 300,000 Sonorans were fully vaccinated, a rate far slower than neighboring Arizona, where more than 3 million people are fully vaccinated.
