Republican State Rep. Shawnna Bolick is running for Secretary of State, she announced Tuesday. Bolick wants to focus on election issues, restoring voters’ trust and de-politicizing the office, she said in a statement announcing her candidacy.
“The Secretary of State is supposed to administer the papers and affairs of the state, work with businesses, and manage and certify elections," she said. "It requires hard work, focus, dedication, and a commitment to put responsibility ahead of personal or partisan preferences. But we have a failure of leadership that has led to rampant distrust in our elections. The real responsibilities of the job have been abandoned in favor of partisan posturing.”
Earlier this year, she sponsored a controversial billthat would have allowed the Legislature to overturn a presidential election.
Others in the race include state Sen.Michelle Ugenti-Rita and state Rep. Mark Finchem, also Republicans. Democrats running include House Minority Leader Reginald Bolding and former Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes.
Current Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is running for governor.
