The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday extended a nationwide ban on some types of rental evictions through the end of July. The moratorium had been set to expire next week.
“Especially in places like Arizona where there is no state or local protection in place, the CDC order is really the last protection standing in the way of tenants losing their home,” said Alieza Durana with the Eviction Lab at Princeton University
The CDC has limited some evictions since September in response to economic turmoil and public health risks associated with the pandemic. Now, virus caseloads have declined and many workers have returned to their jobs, but housing advocates say many families are still struggling. Durana said the moratorium has helped keep people in their homes.
“It’s not a solution to every problem. But it’s really intended to buy property owners and renters time to access rental assistance, to get current on their bills,” Durana said.
Congress has allocated billions of dollars toward helping renters and landlords, but housing advocates say distribution of aid has been slow.
