The effort to vaccinate Mexican border residents continues.
On Thursday, more than 80,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine arrived in Sonora and were destined for the arms of those between the ages of 18 and 39 in the border city of Nogales, along with another roughly 27,000 for Agua Prieta.
In Nogales, several of the city’s massive export factories — or maquiladoras — were used as the administration sites, and workers in that industry were given priority, though all residents in that age group are eligible.
“So this morning we are having very, very long lines at all of our facilities, lines that are going 3, 4, 500 feet, half a mile long,” said Josh Rubin, who serves on the executive board of the maquiladora association Index Nogales, which is partnering with the federal government in the vaccination effort.
On Friday, Rubin said the city was hoping for over 100,000, but that what arrived will be a big help toward the goal of easing border crossing restrictions.
