The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is taking public comments for a revised Gila trout recovery plan.
Just a few decades ago, the native fish was listed as an endangered species, but biologists have made progress bringing it back.
The Gila trout once ranged from western New Mexico to central Arizona, but lost much of its native habitat due to development, overfishing and the introduction of non-native trout.
Climate change and wildfire have damaged trout habitat in the last decade, but advances in genetics have helped biologists in their efforts to restore the fish.
The agency hopes to delist the Gila trout in about a decade.
Members of the public have until Sept. 10 to comment on the new plan.
