Tensions between the Mexican military and a Yaqui community in neighboring Sonora are rising.
Yaqui leaders from the Loma de Bacum community said that their traditional security forces recently forced Mexican military elements to leave their territory, which they claimthe military entered without authorization.
At a press conferenceMonday, tribal member and advisor Guadalupe Flores said that his community is willing to defend itself “until the final consequences.”
Asked if the military’s presence was tied to a major seizureof methamphetamines at a nearby ranch, Flores responded by saying that planting drugs is a way to justify military incursions.
