New COVID-19 Infections Hit 4-Month High In Arizona

Arizona reported 1,945 new COVID-19 infections Wednesday, the highest daily tally in more than four months.

The  Arizona Department of Health Services said Wednesday's update was especially high because of reporting delays over the past few days. But the seven-day average for new cases has been steadily rising for weeks in Arizona. The state is now averaging nearly 800 cases per day — the highest average since mid-March.

Medical experts say the extremely contagious delta variant is causing an uptick in cases nationwide, but say fully vaccinated people still have a high level of protection against the strain.

Mohave County is now reporting the most new cases per capita in Arizona,  according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mohave County has the lowest rate of fully vaccinated residents in the state, about 30%.

And on July 15, Arizona health officials added 1,014 new cases to its coronavirus dashboard, along with 7 more deaths around the state. To learn about this rise in cases, The Show spoke with KJZZ's Katherine Davis-Young, who has been covering the virus and its spread.
