A marriage equality reform measure in neighboring Sonora could get another hearing soon.
State deputy María Alicia Gaytán, head of a key congressional commission, said that a committee hearing could come as soon as early August. But a vote from the full Congress would likely have to wait until the next Legislature takes office in September, according to Sonoran outlet Uniradio.
And that’s frustrating to some Sonoran LGBT activists.
“They’ve been kicking the can down the road for two years,” said Alberto Hernandez, head of Sonora Incluyente, which has been pushing for the reform. The measure was first introduced in August 2019.
Meanwhile, a federal court case that could force the Legislature to act has a hearing later this month.
