The Glendale City Council next week will hold a meeting on proposed water and sewer rate increases.
Currently, the average household consumer in Glendale who uses 9,000 gallons per month currently pays about $82.00 per month.
“Council is proposing a 4.3% increase for water and a 3.0% increase for sewer,” according to the city’s Water Services deputy director Katrina Alberty who said the proposed rate increases are not related to the Colorado River Basin Drought Contingency Plan.
Alberty clarified, “Whether it’s our contracted services, our raw water costs, our chemicals to treat the water, electricity, infrastructure costs to keep the pipes and plants running, [prices] continue to go up.”
The council's proposed plan would increase the average residential customer bill by about a dime per day.
According to the city’s information portal, the most recent rate increase was approved in June 2019 and became effective on Jan. 1, 2021.
If approved, the newly proposed increases for water and sewer rates would go into effect in January of next year.
Glendale gets its water from three primary sources: Salt River Project, which is made up of surface and groundwater; Central Arizona Project, which provides water from the Colorado River; and the city of Glendale's groundwater.
