Groups dedicated to searching for the missing in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, met with security officials this week to discuss safety measures after a searcher was murdered.
The murder of Gladys Aranza Ramos last week has prompted calls by human rights groups, feminist organizations and fellow searchers for greater government attention to the safety of those working to find Sonora’s disappeared.
On Thursday, state officials released a new set of guidelines for working with searching groups.
The agreement was drawn up during a nearly three hour meeting between state and federal officials and members of 11 Sonoran searching groups. It details officials’ responsibilities to provide security, resources and psychological attention. But also requires those with missing loved ones to coordinate with security forces, report threats and refrain from photographing remains.
