Neighboring Sonora, Mexico, reported 400 new coronavirus cases Thursday, the highest daily count in more than six months. Authorities are calling for increased caution, especially among the unvaccinated.
This is the first time since January Sonora has reported 400 coronavirus cases in one day.
Officials say it's the result of lax adherence to safety measures like mask wearing and social distancing, even as cases have been going up for several weeks in the state, and across the country.
Also to blame are several new variants of the virus, including the highly contagious delta strain.
Health Secretary Enrique Clausen this week urged Sonorans to get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible.
Coronavirus cases are now most prevalent among people ages 18-30 in Sonora, most of whom have not yet been able to get the shot. However, vaccinations are beginning for those age groups in many parts of the state.
