The city of Tempe wants proposals for redeveloping nearly 50 acres into a home for a sports team and an entertainment district.
Arizona’s National Hockey League club says they’re very interested in the opportunity, which could lead to their exit from the West Valley.
The land is located on the northeast corner of Priest Drive and Rio Salado Parkway, near Town Lake and the Tempe Center for the Arts.
Officials plan to take redevelopment bids for about a month, but they warn none may be chosen.
Tempe says any professional sports team can submit a pitch.
The Arizona Diamondbacks, who play in downtown Phoenix, and the Arizona Coyotes, who play in Glendale, are both known to have sought new venues in recent years.
The Diamondbacks say they just heard of Tempe’s plan and do not think they fit the description for what the city wants.
The Coyotes say they will be responding to Tempe’s call for bids.

The City of Glendale has been working since last year with the Arizona Coyotes and our Arena Manager, ASM Global, to determine if terms for a long-term agreement can be reached to allow the Coyotes to continue to play in Gila River Arena. We remain committed to that goal.
