Sonoran Reporter Who Had Denounced Threats Against Him Killed In Guaymas

Another reporter in neighboring Sonora has been murdered.

Ricardo López, head of InfoGuaymas, a news website serving the southern Sonora city of Guaymas, was killed in that city Thursday, the state attorney general’s office said. That office is investigating the matter, but it also alerted the federal body tasked with investigating crimes against reporters.

Milton Martínez, a correspondent for the national magazine Proceso and a friend of López’s, shared a video from a March press conference in which Lopez warnedof the dangers and threats faced by him and other reporters in Guaymas.

“Doing journalism right now in Guaymas is extremely risky,” López said in the video.

Martínez said he hopes authorities conduct a “serious investigation in the case of Ricardo,” one that takes into consideration the possible role of his reporting work, something he said hasn’t always happened with previous crimes against reporters.
