As has happened several times in recent years, a major weekend shootout has upended life in the northern Sonora town of Magdalena de Kino.
This time, the violence appears to have temporarily interrupted the vaccination effort in the city, according to a Saturday tweetfrom a federal agency overseeing it. Vaccinations have since restarted.
State and federal forces responded to the shootout, and have made a number of arrests, along with seizing weapons, ammunition and tactical gear, the Sonoran state police said.
Magdalena is about an hour south of the border in Nogales and sits along the most important highway in the state, which has been shut down during previous shootouts. In March, a similar incident claimed at least three lives in the area. In May 2020, a former mayor was killed.
Heavy sustained gunfire could be heard in a videoshot near the city’s well-known plaza and posted to Twitter on Saturday.
