National Evictions Ban Set To Expire Saturday

The national pause on evictions is set to expire Saturday.

A local charity that helps people facing loss of their home says the average family that’s sought help is roughly a year behind on their rent and faces a major struggle to catch up.

St. Vincent de Paul has been helping Phoenix with a federally funded emergency rental aid program for people facing eviction due to the pandemic. The charity also raises money for people who can’t pay their rent and utility bills due to other emergencies.

Public Relations Manager Marisol Saldivar said lots of families are working again and trying to pay their debts, while many landlords are making sincere efforts to set up payment plans.

“It’s really just a matter of a deeply unfortunate situation of months and months of piled bills that’s really hard to catch up on,” she said.

Saldivar said ending the national ban on evictions is inevitable. St. Vincent de Paul was hoping it wouldn’t come during summer when triple digit temperatures make being stuck outside deadly.
