Daily coronavirus cases hit new record highs this week in Mexico.
On Thursday, Mexico’s health ministry posted nearly 25,000 daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 nationwide — the second-straight record-setting day this week. Previously, Wednesday marked a new record with just less than 23,000 cases.
In response to the growing number of infections, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador cited increasing vaccination rates for reducing serious illness and death.
"Those who are vaccinated can even go to the hospital, but it doesn't become serious, and most importantly, (the vaccinated) don't die," he said during a press conference Wednesday.
However, only about 28 million people, or 22% of the population, is fully vaccinated in Mexico.
And while hospitalizations and deaths are still below the highs seen during the peak of the second wave, both are on the rise.
On Tuesday, deaths ticked up to nearly 800 — the highest daily death toll in more than four months.
