The Cherokee Nation traveled to the Navajo Nation to continue talks on a proposed treaty between the two nations.
The treaty would allow the nations to enter inter-governmental relations to support one another on a number of issues.
The tribes could collaborate on health care, jurisdiction, law enforcement, and domestic violence against women.
Law enforcement is an important issue for the Cherokee Nation, as last year’s McGirt vs. Oklahoma ruling restored 700 square miles of land and granted the nation police jurisdiction of that area.
A representative from the Cherokee Nation recalls that treaty talks began about 25 years ago, with the late former Navajo Nation President Albert Hale.
If the Navajo Nation Council agrees to the proposed terms, the inter-tribal treaty would be between the two largest tribal nations in the country.
