School districts in the Valley and in Tucson are announcing they will require masks in its schools starting Tuesday. The move is in reaction to a ruling on the lawsuit against the Phoenix Union High School District’s mask requirement.
A Maricopa County Superior Court judge ruled that a new state law that prohibits public schools from requiring masks has yet to take effect.
As a result, the Catalina Foothills district can legally require universal indoor masking by all students, staff, teachers and visitors on all its school campuses, it said in a Monday letter to parents. This policy applies to vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Masks will be optional outdoors.
Other school districts in the Phoenix Valley that also announced mask requirements on Monday include Tempe Elementary, Tempe Union High School and Kyrene.
The Kyrene district will require masks at schools with substantial COVID community spread or higher. Right now, this applies to all Kyrene schools.
