Authorities Investigating Pipeline Explosion In Coolidge

National and local authorities in Coolidge are investigating the cause of a Sunday morning explosion on the El Paso Natural Gas Pipeline near State Route 87.

Coolidge Police and Fire Departments responded just after 5:30 a.m. Sunday and extinguished the gas line blaze that also caught a nearby house on fire.

The house fire killed two of its residents and severely burned a third who escaped through a window.

Coolidge Police Cmdr. Mark Tercero said investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board and Department of Transportation are taking the lead.

“The NTSB and the DOT will be the primary investigation unit for the gas line failure and our regional fire team will be a support role for them," he said.

A spokesperson for the Arizona Corporation Commission said it has several inspectors on sight who are also serving in a supporting role.

According to officials with the El Paso Natural Gas Pipeline, there was a line failure.
