GOP Lawmakers, Free Enterprise Club Launch Voter ID Ballot Initiative

Some Republican lawmakers and the Free Enterprise Club say they want voters to impose new ID restrictions when casting a ballot.

Supporters of the initiative say they plan to collect signatures to refer the measure to next year’s ballot. They’ll need more than 237,000 valid signatures by July 7, 2022.

The announcement was made on the same day a lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court by voting rights advocates that argues two state laws dealing with early voting are discriminatory; one would remove people from the early voting list if they hadn’t voted in two consecutive election cycles, the other limits the amount of time voters who forget to sign their early ballot envelopes have to fix that problem.

Julia Shumway has been covering these issues for the Arizona Capitol Times. The Show spoke with her to learn more about these developments.
