His retirement from football has been speculated for several years, but Arizona Cardinals veteran wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald told radio listeners Friday that he “doesn’t have the urge” to play football prior to the upcoming NFL season.
Fitzgerald has been a free agent since the end of the 2020 season, his 17th season in the NFL. He has spent all 17 seasons with the Cardinals.
On his Sirius XM radio show “Let’s Go,” Fitzgerald told listeners that he isn’t officially retired, but isn’t currently planning on suiting up this season.
“For now, I’ll be a radio broadcaster. To be honest with you, I just don’t have the urge to play right now. I don't know how I'll feel in September, October, November moving forward but I just, today, I just don't have the urge. And I think I have to be respectful of that,” said Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald has the second-most receptions and receiving yards in NFL history.
The Cardinals, with or without Fitzgerald, begin regular season play on Sept. 12 against the Tennessee Titans.
