The so-called “surge” in migrants at our southern border was once again in the headlines in recent weeks as Border Patrol agents made an estimated 210,000 apprehensions along the southern border in July. Those are numbers like we haven't seen in two decades.
At the same time, we’re seeing the Biden administration step up its enforcement efforts to try to stem the tide.
Immigration officials have restarted expedited removal flights, sending some migrants back to Central Mexico to seek asylum there. And Biden has continued Title 42 restrictions — a Trump-era pandemic policy officials say is aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19.
In a recent episode of The Show, we heard from the Migration Policy Institute’s Doris Meissner, who says these policies will work to an extent, but not fully.
The Show also wanted to hear about what these policies mean for the people living through them.
Joanna Williams is executive director of the Kino Border Initiative, a Catholic organization that runs a shelter for migrants on the border in Nogales, Sonora.
The Show spoke with her more about what they’re seeing — who’s coming, and if she’s seeing this "surge" at the shelter.
