Sonoran prisoners have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.
Through mid-August, there were 155 confirmed cases in Sonoran prisons, the fourth-highest figure nationwide, according to datafrom the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), which has been monitoring prisons during the pandemic. That’s nearly 4% of the roughly 4,100 prisoner cases confirmed across Mexico.
There have also been eight confirmed prisoner deaths in Sonora, according to the CNDH.
Nearly 2,000 vaccine doses have been administered to prisoners in the state, though the commission noted that they were all given at the federal facility in Hermosillo. Sonoran media reported earlier this month that prisoners at other facilities in the state were set to receive vaccines.
As recently as July, no doses had been administered to prisoners in Sonora, according to reportingin El Economista.
