Arizona Teachers Academy Enrollment Is Growing. Is It Enough To Ease The Shortage?

The Arizona Teachers Academy saw enrollment growth last year — 22% more students than the year before.

There was also an increase in the number of students earning their degrees, with nearly 950 students achieving that.

Those numbers come from a newly released annual report of the program, which was started in 2017 as a way of trying to deal with the state’s ongoing teacher shortage.

Students in the teachers academy have their tuition covered, in exchange for those students then going into teaching.

All three public universities, as well as a few community colleges, offer the program.

To learn about this growth, The Show spoke with Fred DuVal, a member of the Arizona Board of Regents.
