New Study Shows Weight Gain Among Some Kids During Pandemic

Many people have gained weight during the pandemic.

A small, self-reported study from this spring found middle-aged men and women each gained about 1.5 pounds each month between February and June of 2020.

And now, a new report finds kids have also put on weight over the last year and a half or so.

This study compared the body mass index of 5- to 17-year-olds during the pandemic, between March 2020 and this January to the same months the years before.

Corinna Koebnick, a research scientist at Kaiser Southern California, worked on the study.

The Show spoke with her to learn how significant the weight gain was in general among preteens over the last 18 months.
